Robot Sumo Wrestling

The Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences, Campus Wels’ very successful Robo-Racing Team is presenting its best sumo robots at the Euroby in Linz!

Robot sumo wrestlers compete in three categories that differ with respect to the size of the ring and of the robots.

Nanosumo:
Ring (diameter): 20 cm
Size of the Robots: 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm

Microsumo:
Ring (diameter): 38.5 cm
Size of the Robots: 5 cm x 5 cm x 5 cm

Minisumo:
Ring (diameter): 77 cm
Size of the Robots: 10 cm x 10 cm (no prescribed height)

Just like in classical sumo, two robots face off and try to force their opponent out of the ring. As soon as the START button is pushed and the battle commences, external intervention is no longer permissible. Whoever’s built the better robot and designed the more effective strategy emerges victorious. All sorts of tools that could damage the opposing robot—a vice grip, for instance—are prohibited. A match lasts for three rounds. If both robots are still in the ring after three minutes, then the match is declared a draw.

The Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences, Campus Wels’ Robo-Racing Team is made up of students from the school’s Automation Technology program. The squad has chalked up an impressive international record. Wels’ robots took 5th place at this year's EUROBOT Robotics World Championships in Germany, and triumphed in both the Minisumo and Microsumo events at the recent Robot Challenge in Vienna.
